When I heard the term “Jam band” or hear music that fits in that category, I often think: “Is this music relevant anymore?” I mean we had so much of it, and not a lot of revolutionary bands since the Dead. Well The Slackwater News is one of a few bands that touch on the psychedelic jam rock scene in the area and one things for sure, they are good. I love the singers voice, the partial gruff scream like high notes and the smooth tones therein, the guitar work is wonderful and the rhythm section keeps that groove steady and unwavering. Their latest release is “Graveyard Mates” with quite wonderful artwork I might add, and this disc is a testament to that tightness, and musicianship quality you need and expect from this genre. Not one track stood out to me in particular, this type of music isn’t my thing, but what did catch my attention is how this music felt original, in that it felt like something you’d hear out of the 70’s. This album sounds wonderful, feels thick, and puts this band right where they deserve to be: in the ears of those who love this music. Oh, and to answer the question “Is this type of music relevant?” you can find their album on CD Baby.
